Mesopotamia

After an absence of 25 years, I returned to Iraq on May, 2004.

 The  17 hours journey by car from Beirut  to Baghdad was dangerous, exciting and magical, despite the misery of  the prevailing war.

In the last 4 years since my visit, my beloved Iraq has sunk deeper into trouble. Newly found democracy is misused by political factions and ethnic divisions, giving  rise to violent clashes that added to the overall paralysis of Iraq. Rebuilding projects are slow and erratic. The major services are chaotic and badly managed. The overall security has improved in some major cities, but cities like Mosul and its surroundings are not so lucky.

We are all hoping that 2009 will bring with it, a new hope for Iraq, provided the focus is returned to the welfare of the people of Iraq and not to political games between external and internal selfish elements.

It seems that the suffering of ordinary Iraqi people will continue for some time, as the occupied state is torn  by intolerance, greed, ignorance, selfishness and incompetence.
