Visiting Mosul 3 Shahersouk Mosque Our local Mosque, where my father was the Imam for most of his life. I used to call for Prayers at times, as indeed did all my brothers before me. Climbing up the spiral stairs to the top of the Minaret with some apprehension to reach the top and blast my lungs with ' Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar'. They did not have loudspeakers in the 50's. The minaret was decorated with small lights on the eve of important festivals like Eid Al-Kabeer and Eid Al-Saghir and a small choir of children that included me, chanted joyous hymns while holding those rails for fear of heights. |
